Good, spirited chat today. Hope to see everyone next week, where I'm sure we'll be talking football playoff stuff.

Caitlin Duffy transferring from Colorado State to USD for basketball. It's not purely for athletics, but she's got to sit out a season. That wouldn't be a bad idea for high schools. You want to move to...

But one isn't in sports, and the other three are in elementary school. Sports aren't really factors for them (yet).

Or, like I said, make them sit a year to make sure they are doing it for the right reason (academics).

I'm not a big fan of kids trying to build champions on their own. I'd rather see them work with the teammates they've had since middle school.

Absolutely. If there was such a concern about it, have a 1-year stipulation. Much like the NCAA. You want to transfer from SDSU to USD, fine, but you're sitting out a year.
View Article4:32 James D. Cimburek
I would not have a problem if the SDSHAA said that, if you open enroll you sit a year.

so you disagree with Stu on his thoughts? He despises it…it compromises the "competitive integrity" of high school sports…as Stu says…and I agree with him
View Article4:31 James D. Cimburek
Never said it was. I am just saying that, if that is the system that is in place, why not go out of your way to promote yourself to try and draw top students from otherschools.
View Article4:30 James D. Cimburek
Sports is not what open enrollment was for, but that is what it has turned in to. It was meant to give you educational opportunities.

There are many examples of area kids open enrolling to another school.

Is it? Gayville-Volin's No. 2 runner open enrolls from Yankton. Put her on the Gazelles and Yankton is a title contender.

Doug Hanson and Steve Schermerhorn maybe…but that was in late 90s

Then that's Yankton's mistake. I drive up I-29 and see advertisements promoting public schools in a few towns.

Every once in a while, we hear the same complaint about catholic schools down in Nebraska.
View Article4:26 James D. Cimburek
Everyone "recruits" kids these days. Open enrollment assured of that. The difference is that O'Gorman and STM don't have to take everyone that comes to their door.
View Article4:25 James D. Cimburek
And Yankton actually started climbing back up the ladder because they don't. The football players going out for track helped make the football team better.

@ryan_streit Agreed. Plus, York has wanted in as well. GPAC schools are already playing York in most sports.

@jhoeck too bad they won't let Dakota State in. Dumb rule that they don't allow public schools.

Why does Rapid City dominate baseball? Because they specialize

And again, if it's ALL numbers/enrollment, why hasn't Rapid City risen up?

His argument that 11AAA and 11AA semifinals are formalities now…which they are…but aren't 11A (West Central, Dell Rapids, Madison, Tea) and 11B essentially (Winner, STM, Aberdeen Roncalli, tri valley)

No way AA should have been broken up. He was right to call it an overreaction, that's exactly what it was. Look at the way things have evened out. It was cyclical. That's been my opinion from day one.

He also stated that Brandon Valley is an example of an ESD team having a good year in AAA…yet they would be 7th or 8th best team in old AA (counting harrisburg)

Word for word what he read at QB Club last week. I agreed with most of it, to be honest. 8 and 10 teams is too few for a class, and trying to honor conference ties makes state scheduling a pain.

speaking of all of that controversy, what were thoughts on Stu Whitney's piece?
View Article4:13 James D. Cimburek
I think he was referring to 0-9 and having a playoff game to forfeit. If I remember correctly, everyone gets in in Minnesota.
